The American School of Valencia (Colegio Hispano-Norteamericano),
founded in 1980, is a bilingual, bicultural, parent-owned, co-educational
day school, situated in a private estate some 20 kms north of Valencia
and overlooking the Mediterranean. The Parents' Association, to which
all parents belong, elects the Board of Governors. The school is an
accredited member of the Middle States Association, and it is also
recognized by the Spanish Ministry of Education.
The school follows an American college-preparatory curriculum which
combines at higher grade levels with the Spanish curriculum to prepare
students for the Spanish university entrance exam. English is the
principal language of instruction, with Spanish language skills
practised for a minimum of one hour daily. A second foreign language
is taught from seventh grade. School is open from September to June.
The faculty are fully trained teachers from USA, UK, Canada, Australia
and Spain.
Students at the American School of Valencia are mainly Spanish
nationals. They are admitted in Pre-Kindergarten and develop English
language fluency before beginning elementary studies. Admission
to other grades is open to English speakers, subject to testing
and satisfactory school report from the previous school.
The campus of the American School of Valencia comprises 32,000
square metres. Two modern purpose-built structures house the pre-school,
elementary, and high school. There are computer labs, four science
labs, an art room, a music room, and a senior and junior library.
A new swimming pool and a multi-purpose building for arts and sports
are projected.
Sports offered include basketball, soccer and volleyball.
