The American School of Bilbao has existed as a private non-profit
school for children of all nationalities since 1967. The school follows
an American international curriculum in English for grades Pre-Kinder
through grade 12 and fulfills the requirements for complete validation
of studies in the Spanish and American systems. Students are prepared
to take the Spanish UNED examinations for university entrance as well
as receiving a US High School diploma.
The school has been accredited since 1985 by the New England Association
of Schools and Colleges (NEASC) and the European Council of International
Schools (ECIS). It was officially recognized by the Spanish Ministry
of Education as a 'Foreign School Located in Spain' in 1981. The
academic level of the School is constantly checked by Stanford tests.
The PSAT/NMSQT is administered to 10th and 11th graders with Advanced
Placement Examinations available in certain areas.
The school also hosts an EFL program which runs on Tuesday/Thursday
evenings, Saturdays, the entire months of July and August and services
over 1,200 students from the surrounding communities. There are
considerable waiting lists for some of these programs.
The American school of Bilbao is located in the rural community
of Berango, approximately 20 kilometers to the north of Bilbao and
120 kilometers from the French border. The school is near the coast
with the full flavor of the Spanish lifestyle all around supplemented
by the richness of the Basque heritage. Information about the local
area can be obtained at the web site: http://www.getxo.net/
The school's present facility, on 16,000 square meters of land,
is comprised of 19 classrooms, a library, a science laboratory,
a computer room, an art studio, a ceramics studio, a music room,
an audio-visual room, locker rooms, a pre-school playground, two
outdoor hard-court soccer pitches, a lounge for 11th and 12th graders,
and a covered basketball court. A new building houses a computer
laboratory, faculty rooms, a multi-purpose room, a large new library
and administration offices.
